Episode Transcript/Quiz

Episode Introduction

We did American Rivers, so it’s time for another continent. This week’s mini episode is European rivers.

That’s it. Ten questions. Ten rivers. Good luck!

European River Trivia Questions

  1. What river, the second-longest in Europe, begins in Germany, empties into the Black Sea, and runs by four national capitals?
    a. The Danube. It runs through Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade.
  2. Quasimodo could look out the towers of Notre Dame de Paris and see what river?
    a. The Seine. The river underwent heavy cleaning for the 2024 Summer Olympics
  3. What river begins in the Czech Republic, ends in the North Sea, and splits & reforms around Hamburg, Germany?
    a. The Elbe. The name derives from the Latin Albis meaning river or riverbed.
  4. The longest river in Italy, what waterway begins in the Cottian Alps, flows through Turin, and ends in the Adriatic Sea near Venice?
    a. The Po. It’s connected to Milan via navigli designed by Leonardo da Vinci.
  5. What river, before emptying into the Bay of Pomerania and the Baltic Sea, forms much of the border between Germany and Poland?
    a. The Oder. The name derives from the Illyrian word for “water vein”.
  6. The longest river in Poland, that waterway cuts through Krakow, Warsaw, and Gdańsk?
    a. The Vistula. Sadly, many of the ashes from the victims of Auschwitz were dumped into the river during World War II.
  7. What river starts in the Alps of Switzerland, flows through Lake Geneva, then into France where it ends in the Mediterranean Sea?
    a. The Rhône. The source of the river is the Rhône Glacier located above the village of Overwald.
  8. What river begins in Ukraine, flows through Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia where it joins the Danube?
    a. The Tisza. While the river today runs through several nations, it used to be entirely contained inside the old Kingdom of Hungary.
  9. The longest in France, what river begins in the south of the country, flowing north and west until it empties into the Bay of Biscay in the Atlantic Ocean?
    a. The Loire. The valley it forms, aptly named the Loire Valley, is known as the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, orchards, and other farming fields.
  10. Located entirely in Russia, what is the longest river in Europe?
    a. The Volga. It flows through five of the ten largest cities in Russia, including Moscow, before emptying into the Caspian Sea.
