It’s not glamorous, but it’s useful stuff to know. Plus, we haven’t had a science-based episode in a while.

The Dorky Round

  1. What part of the circulatory system carries oxygenated blood away from the heart?
    a. Arteries. Veins bring deoxygenated blood back.
  2. In what part of the body will you find the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones?
    a. The skull. It’s made up of eight different bones.
  3. What is the largest human organ?
    a. Accounting for 12-15% of your body weight, it’s the skin.
  4. What part of the digestive system, when stretched out, can measure between three to five meters long?
    a. The small intestine
  5. What part of the body is divided into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx?
    a. The spine
  6. What part of the eye contracts or opens based on how much light there is?
    a. The pupil
  7. Biceps, triceps, and deltoid are what?
    a. Muscles
  8. What’s the only human organ that can float in water?
    a. Don’t overthink it. It’s the lungs.
  9. Roughly 20 percent of our daily calories are used by which organ?
    a. The brain
  10. Type 1 and 2 diabetes are common conditions affecting which organ?
    a. The pancreas

The Geeky Round

  1. If you broke a phalange, what is getting splinted?
    a. A finger
  2. Which are the fastest muscles in the human body?
    a. The eyelid muscles. A human may blink over 11,000 times a day.
  3. Located in your legs, what is the largest nerve in the body?
    a. The sciatic nerve. It runs from your lower back down to your foot.
  4. What is the smallest bone in the human body?
    a. The stapes. It’s Latin for stirrup and it’s part of the inner ear.
  5. Sometimes called the gullet, what organ connects to the top stomach?
    a. The esophagus
  6. What’s the largest muscle in the body?
    a. The gluteus maximus or the buttocks
  7. If someone has Situs inversus, what is different about their organs?
    a. They’re reversed. For example, their heart is on the right, not left. It occurs in about 1 in 10,000 people.
  8. Babies only do this once or twice a minute. But adults do what around 10 times a minute?
    a. Blink.
  9. What’s the largest bone in the body?
    a. The femur or thigh bone
  10. The most common form of these are made from calcium oxalate.
    a. Kidney stones

The Nerdy Round

  1. What is the name of the crescent-shaped area on the bed of your fingernail or toenail?
    a. The lunula. It means little moon.
  2. Also known as the cholecyst, what organ stores bile?
    a. The gallbladder
  3. Each hemisphere of the brain is divided into how many lobes?
    a. Four. Frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital.
  4. The forearm is made up of what two bones?
    a. The Radius and the UIna
  5. What is the name for the “whites” of the eyes?
    a. Sclera
  6. On average, what hair color has the fewest number of strands?
    a. Redheads have, on average, the fewest strands of hair.
  7. How many bones does an adult human have?
    a. 206. You have 270 at birth, but some fuse together as you mature.
  8. Humans can see more shades of what color than any others?
    a. Green
  9. What’s another name for cerumen?
    a. Ear wax
  10. Which finger is the strongest?
    a. The pinky. It accounts for about a third of your grip strength.
